Mosquito Control Tips

Spring is here. Many people will be spending a lot of time outside during the spring. Mosquitoes can ruin a fun day outside. The good news is that there are ways that you can control mosquitoes.

Eliminate Standing Water

Female mosquitoes need water in order to breed. The egg will hatch three days later. A mosquito will become a full-grown adult after 12 days. A female mosquito can lay up to 400 eggs at one time. That is why mosquitoes can breed very quickly.

You will need to eliminate standing water. Tree holes, pot holes, discarded cans and old tires are some of the sources of standing water.

Keep Your Grass Cut

Mosquitoes often rest in grass. They do not need it to reproduce, but they often spend their days in the grass. That is why it is a good idea to keep your grass cut. You should keep your grass at 5 inches or less. If the grass is cut low, then the mosquitoes will be forced to go somewhere else.

Use Mosquito-Repelling Plants

There are many plants that can be used to repel mosquitoes. You can use citronella grass. The citronella oil can repel mosquitoes. You can also use basil to repel mosquitoes. Additionally, you can use lemon balm, but it is considered invasive. You will have to put it in a jar if you want to use it.

Get the Help of Your Neighbors

Your mosquito control efforts will be in vain if your mosquitoes are not doing what they are supposed to be doing. A mosquito can fly about two miles from its breeding site. That is why you will need to ask your neighbors to get their own mosquitoes under control.

Keep Your Swimming Pool Cleaned

Chlorine does not kill mosquitoes. You can prevent mosquitoes from infiltrating your pool by using a filter and a pool cover. A mosquito will not lay eggs in a pool that is covered or disinfected.

Call a Professional

While there are a lot of great home treatments that you can use to get rid of mosquitoes, it is best for you to call a professional. A professional company can treat an existing infestation and help you prevent another one from occurring in the future. They can use a treatment that lasts anywhere from 14 to 21 days. You will be able to enjoy time outside without worrying about mosquitoes.
